Growing up, Michael Joseph Arceneaux was always surrounded by words. His mother was a writer and journalist, and his father was an artist. As a result, literature was in his blood from birth. However, it wasn’t until he discovered his love for poetry that he decided to pursue a career in writing.
Arceneaux began writing poems when he was just 12 years old. He would spend hours in the library reading classic poets like William Wordsworth and John Keats, soaking up their wisdom and inspiration. Eventually, Arceneaux’s poems found their way into magazines and newspapers across the country.

His Writing Process
Houston native Michael Joseph Arceneaux began writing seriously in 2009. He credits his early love of reading as the impetus for his eventual passion for writing. “I loved dipping into other people’s imaginations and seeing what they had to say,” he says.
Arceneaux has written three novels, all self-published. His most recent book, The Life and Times of Sonny Rollins, tells the story of saxophonist Sonny Rollins through the eyes of Arceneaux’s alter ego, Larry Lee. Arceneaux is currently working on a fourth novel.
Though he started out writing short stories, Arceneaux quickly realized that novels were where his voice could truly be heard. “A novel allows me to explore a lot more than just one character or situation,” he says. “It’s like a sandbox where I can build whatever world I want.”
Arceneaux composes much of his fiction on long walks around Houston, giving him plenty of time to muse and develop ideas. He also uses online tools such as Google Docs and Reddit to bounce ideas off of fellow writers and get feedback on his work before eventually publishing it online.
Arceneaux believes that writing is not about being perfect; it’s about getting your thoughts out there and letting others judge them rather than worrying about whether or not they’re good enough. “Writing is really just another way for me to communicate with the world,” he says.
