50-years old Costa Book Awards scrapped

Founded in 1971, the Costa Book Awards has been stopped after running for half a century. The announcement is made on their own official social networking handle on June 10, 2022.

“After half a century of celebrating probably the most enjoyable books compiled by gifted authors from over the United kingdom & Ireland, Costa Coffee has had the tough decision to finish the Costa Book Awards. Exactly what a great half a century it’s been!,” a publish by Costa Book Awards’ official Twitter handle read.

“Which means that the 2021 Costa Book Awards locked in Feb 2022 was our 50th and final awards,” reads an announcement on their own official website. No particular reason was handed for ending the awards. Presently, there appear to become no plans for that awards to become organised by another sponsor.

The sudden announcement required publishers and readers unexpectedly. Here is how a number of them responded:

The awards were initially known as the Whitbread Book Awards till 2005, and was absorbed by Costa for financing and running it. In 2019, Whitbread offered Costa to the organization Coca-Cola, that was now running the awards. The annual awards received to authors in the United kingdom and Ireland for his or her outstanding operate in five groups, namely: First Novel, Biography, Novel, Poetry, and Children’s Book.

A few of the previous winners from the Costa Book Awards include authors Sally Rooney, Gail Honeyman, Hannah Lowe, amongst others.
